CinemaNX’s TT3D: Closer To The Edge is highest grossing documentary opener since Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11

TT3D: Closer To The Edge has smashed box office records to become the UK’s highest weekend box office documentary opener since Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, grossing £312,998 over its opening weekend. Financed, produced and distributed by CinemaNX, the film follows key riders as they embark on the thrilling 2010 TT race on the Island, and explores what motivates these men and women to do what they do – to feel truly alive.

Word-of-mouth seems to be a big factor, and daily box office is steadily growing – Tuesday’s box office was the highest daily figure since the start of the bank holiday weekend. Supported by the UK Film Council, the exit polls from last week show a groundbreaking 96% top level favourable rating for the film from audience members.

CinemaNX chairman Steve Christian says, “This is a really good result that we’re all proud of at NX and Isle of Man Film. A smart distribution campaign carefully targeting both the core audience and a wider documentary-loving demographic is working. From our online Facebook and iPad/iPhone game which had over 3 million interactions and boosted early awareness, to careful guerrilla marketing to pretty much anyone who has ever had anything to do with a motorbike, we’ve managed to get the attention of cinemagoers and get them into cinemas on the hottest weekend of the year so far.”

The film was screened on 70 screens across the UK during its opening week. That number will almost double from Friday, bringing the total number of screens showing TT3D Closer to the Edge to 135.

TT3D: Closer to the Edge to be released in UK Cinemas in 3D on 22nd April 2011

CinemaNX announce that actor and lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars, Jared Leto will narrate upcoming feature film TT3D: Closer to the Edge. The film will be released in cinemas nationwide in 3D on 22 April 2011.

Having seen an early cut of the film Jared Leto said, “I’m proud to be a part of this groundbreaking film that celebrates this famous event and the legendary spirit of the men and women who push themselves beyond the limit to places few could even imagine.”

Minister for the Department of Economic Development, Allan Bell, MHK says, “After many, many months in development and production, we are truly delighted to finally get this unique and thrilling documentary film finished and ready for release to audiences around the world. There will undoubtedly be huge interest in the film and we feel sure that it will enhance future TT events and will increase visitor numbers to TT meetings in the years to come. The film is a credit to everyone who helped in its creation. The Isle of Man premiere of the film is currently being organised and it is anticipated that the film will screen in Douglas throughout this year’s TT fortnight.”

CinemaNX Chairman and Producer of Closer to the Edge, Steve Christian said, “it is really very satisfying to hear everybody’s very positive reaction to the film. Jared’s reaction echoes perfectly the response we have had so far. To hear people talk about our film as humbling and life affirming is incredible. Jared’s admiration for the characters in our film is clear and he will add to what I hope will be a great viewing experience.”

TT3D: Closer to the Edge is a film about the TT, the world-famous motorcycle race that takes place on the Isle of Man every year. Racing along public roads on bikes just inches apart – with speeds hitting 200mph – drama, tension and tragedy all combine to thrill the audience and tell a very moving human story. Every rider knows that each race might be his or her last. Riders pit their skills against each other with a determination to win and push themselves beyond their limits in their bid to become “King of the Mountain”.

The film follows the leading riders in the 2010 race – modern day gladiators who live and breathe road racing – and meet some of its biggest stars: in particular Guy Martin and Ian Hutchinson. Martin is a lovable rogue with a unique point of view on life who doesn’t play by the rules. A true maverick, he’s regarded as the “People’s Champion” and his off -road antics continually exasperate his sponsor and race officials. His determination to win his first race pushes him to the limit. Hutchinson, on the other hand is dedicated, focused and works hard to stay at the top.

A story about freedom of choice and the strength of human spirit; it’s also an examination of what motivates those rare few, this elite band of brothers who risk everything to win. Filmed in stunning 3D, Closer to the Edge is a story of about what it means to be truly alive.

The film also features music from Thirty Seconds To Mars, including hit song Closer To The Edge.

TT3D: CLOSER TO THE EDGE is directed by Richard de Aragues, produced by Steve Christian and Marc Samuelson and was shot and will be released in 3D.
