“Isle of Man is a truly widescreen, cinematic experience” – Manchester Evening Standard

In his holiday review journalist Lee Swettenham gives the thumbs-up to the Isle of Man both as a destination for film fans and for tourists in general. Lee says that: “The Isle of Man can do more than just motorbike races – it can now rightly claim to be one of cinema’s most sought-after film sets.”

The Disappearance of Alice Creed

Principal Photography has been completed for the tense thriller which stars Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia), Eddie Marsan (Vera DrakeMe and Orson Welles) and Martin Compston (The Damned United). Filming took place entirely on the Island with the majority of it at Island Studios near Ramsey. With Isle of Man workers totalling more than half of the crew, The Disappearance of Alice Creed has been a great opportunity for local crew to take on challenging roles and enhance their skills.

 

New members of staff at the Film Commission

The Film Commission has expanded with two new members of staff. Gill Young, our new Contract and Productions Support Officer and Sam Christian, our Film Officer have both started in the past two weeks and will work with exisiting staff in supporting existing production and new projects. One of Gill’s main duties will be Production liasion with local authorities and residents.

 

Our next Production: “Piccadilly Jim”

We have now received Treasury approval for Piccadilly Jim, which is due to be filmed on the Island between 24th November to the 19th December 2003. Filming will take place at Island Studios in Ramsey for the most part. The film is based on the P G Wodehouse novel of the same name. The principal cast is Sam Rockwell (The Green Mile, Charlie’s Angels) Brenda Blethyn (Secrets and Lies, Little Voice) Tom Hollander (Gosford Park, Enigma) and Tom Wilkinson (Girl with a Pearl Earring, Shakespeare in Love)

 

“The Heart of Me” actress Olivia Williams Wins Award

Olivia Williams has won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a British Independent Film for her role in ‘The Heart of Me’, which was produced in conjunction with the Isle of Man Film Commission. The award was presented at the British Independent Film Awards held at Hammersmith Palais, Hammersmith, London on 4th November.

‘The Heart of Me’ was filmed on the Island in 2001 and also stars Helena Bonham Carter and Paul Bettany. The story follows two sisters in the 1930’s.

 

Change of Staff at Isle of Man Film Commission

We are currently recruiting for two new members of staff in the Film Office. Kim Fletcher is leaving the film office after 4 years, after having been promoted. We are therefore looking for a Film Officer to take her place. We have also developed a further new role for a Contracts and Production Support Officer.
