Filmmaker Rory Dorling has received a personalised tour of the Pinewood Studios facility in Buckinghamshire. The visit was part of the top prize awarded to Rory at this year’s Isle of Man Film Festival, organised by Mannin Shorts.
Rory Dorling, whose film Paper Journey won prizes for the Non Fiction and Best Overall categories was personally escorted around the state of the art film facilities and TV stages by Pinewood’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager Mark Hamilton.
During the visit Rory was introduced to Ian Tapp (AMPS), Pinewood’s rerecording mixer and BAFTA and Academy Award winner for Slumdog Millionaire. Ian demonstrated to Rory Dolby® Atmos™, a revolutionary new audio technology, at Pinewood’s Powell Theatre. This was followed by a visit to the 007 Stage, Europe’s biggest soundstage at 60,000 square feet to see crew rigging the set builds for Cinderella, Disney’s first-ever live action feature directed by Academy Award®-nominee Kenneth Branagh. Finally Rory visited the Underwater Stage, Europe’s first studio-based underwater filming stage and which was used for some of the incredible underwater shots in mega-blockbuster Skyfall starring Daniel Craig. Rory said about his visit:
“To have the opportunity to see the world’s best studio in action was incredible. To see some of the amazing facilities was inspiring and re-iterates my desire to make it in this competitive industry.”

Two screenings, free to schoolchildren classes and their teachers, are to be held at the Broadway Cinema Douglas on Tuesday October 22nd 2013 as part of the National Youth Film Festival (NYFF). They are:
THE GRUFFALO (Cert:U) Shown at 10:00 hrs, and;
FROM UP ON POPPY HILL (Cert:U) Shown at 13:00 hrs
Both screenings are held as part of the National Youth Film Festival (NYFF) 2013 which takes place across Britain during October. Sponsored by the British Film Institute and Film Nation, a UK based charity, the National Youth Film Festival aims to:
• Encourage and develop young audiences for cinema
• Provide young people with new and exciting opportunities to watch, understand and make film
• Give young people a strong voice and involve them in the process
• Celebrate young people’s film making and engagement
• Have a long-term impact of increasing paid-for admissions
• Build respect for intellectual property (IP), explore IP issues and communicate IP messages
• Grow film skills amongst young people and adults

Local high school student Michael Smedhurst visited a film studio on the Isle of Man in March 2013 during the filming of The Christmas Candle, where he interviewed the stars of the film and toured the set. Michael got his opportunity as a member of Filmclub, which operates across most schools in the Isle of Man. MannIN Shorts have recently taken over the organisation of the Isle of Man Film Ffestival. This year there will be a wealth of screenings, competitions and workshops over the weekend, all listed in the attached document. In addition MannIN Shorts have invited Isle of Man Film to host the Friday evening, which will be a screening of modern classic The Heart of Me starring Paul Bettany and Helena Bonham-Carter followed by a Q&A with the film’s producer Martin Pope and screenwriter Lucinda Coxon.
Hilary Dugdale, manager of Isle of Man Film said: “I am delighted that Martin is able to join us at this year’s festival and share some of his experience and advice with aspiring filmmakers in the Isle of Man. Martin’s skill as a producer is second-to-none and it was a hard choice as to which of his films to revisit at this year’s festival. The Heart of Me is a great study in what can be achieved on the Island in terms of exterior locations, set-build and quality production design.”

This academic year saw the launch of FILMCLUB across eighteen participating schools in the Isle of Man. Supported by Department of Education and Children, Isle of Man Film and CinemaNX, FILMCLUB is a fun and educational in-school club scheme which seeks to educate, engage and develop schoolchildren through the study and enjoyment of films. From March 5th to Friday 9th March, nine Island schools will play host to FILMCLUB on the Road, a mobile interactive cinema experience.
FILMCLUB on the Road brings together over 1000 young members to watch films such as Time Bandits, ET The Extra Terrestrial, Whistle Down the Wind and Big Fish amongst other amazing films. Children from participating schools will be given the chance to win prizes and, after much healthy debate about the stories, will be given a chance to be film critics for the day when they post a review on the FILMCLUB website!
During the week the youngsters will also enjoy two CLOSE ENCOUNTER sessions with special industry guest Steve Christian, Chairman of CinemaNX. Steve has produced many Manx films including box-office smash TT3D: Closer to the Edge and the Oscar-nominated Chico & Rita.
At the hosting schools FILMCLUB will install a state-of-the-art cinema-sized screen and speaker system, bean bags, popcorn and giant cut-outs of famous filmstars to make the experience unforgettable. Each screening will be followed by an interactive discussion hosted by a FILMCLUB presenter, and a review writing session.
John Gill, Head of Legal and Administrative Support Services at the Department of Education and Children, said:
“I’m delighted that so many schools have got on board with FILMCLUB. It is important that children are given an opportunity to reflect on issues, develop opinions and learn about matters outside of their experience. We look forward to an action-packed week of films and debate about the issues raised.”

Launched at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2011, Collabor8te is an exciting new platform for short filmmaking. This unique collaboration combines script development from The Bureau, production from Rankin Film and distribution on DazedTV.com. Collabor8te will develop, finance and produce new British short fiction, creating an online distribution platform that celebrates the best short filmmaking talent, old and new.
Collabor8te are looking to champion new writing talent from the UK and Ireland by opening a call for short film scripts (up to 15 pages) on 1st August 2011. They will then develop 10 short listed scripts, and out of those 10 they will produce up to 8 short films during 2012 with budgets up to £10,000 per film.
