John Craine

I grew up on the Isle of Man before studying for my BA in English and Philosophy at the University of York.

After graduating I got accepted for the MA filmmaking course at the London Film School with a couple of shorts I’d made whilst at university. Whilst at LFS I shot a number of shorts that gained official selections and prizes at various international festivals. My entire film school training was using 16mm and 35mm film, so since graduating in 2010 I’ve been expanding my digital expertise and experience with kit ranging from the lower end Canon 5D and EX1 cameras to the cinema standard Red MX and Arri Alexa, although I definitely still have a soft spot for celluloid.

Also experience in 35mm, 16mm and most other major formats.

My first feature film "Blackbird" was nominated for the Michael Powell Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2013 and a Scottish BAFTA in the same year.

I work in both fiction and documentary. I’m interested in making challenging films that come at a story from an unusual angle and that ask to be told in a bold visual style, be they fiction or non-fiction.

I shot my first feature film in the summer of 2011.
