Could FOX Sports take over Isle of Man headquartered Pokerstars (The Stars Group)?

May 10, 2019 | Isle of Media

Isle of Man News: U.S. sports network giant FOX Sports is getting into the sports betting game. Signing a $236 million deal to acquire 4.99% of the Stars Group, FOX Sports has the right acquire up to a 50% equity stake in The Stars Group’s U.S. business, subject to certain conditions and applicable gaming regulatory approvals, and prior to the tenth anniversary of the commercial agreement as Marketwatch reports. So no takeover for Isle of Man Pokerstars yet, but an exciting strategic alliance of sports television and betting with the launch of FOX Bets.

With the U.S. Supreme Court paving the way for all 50 states to allow legal sports betting, the new alliance is a major step for the Isle of Man Digital Media and eGaming industry. With the recent takeover of Sky Sports, The Stars Group already has a stronghold in the U.K. The new media partnership with a broadcaster and major sports television network expands the reach now to the U.S. Digital sports wagering as well as eSports represent growing market opportunities to connect directly with consumers and expand the reach of traditional sports.

The Stars Group owns or licenses gambling brands, including PokerStars, PokerStars Casino, BetStars, Full Tilt, BetEasy, Sky Bet, Sky Vegas, Sky Casino, Sky Bingo, Sky Poker and Oddschecker.

FOX Sports and The Stars Group have entered a long-term commercial agreement through which FOX Sports will provide The Stars Group with an exclusive license to use certain FOX Sports trademarks. The partners expect to launch two products in the Fall of 2019 under the FOX Bet umbrella, a nationwide free-to-play game and a betting platform on the outcome of a wide range of sporting events.

Isle of Man Movies you can stream on Amazon or Netflix

May 4, 2019 | Isle of Media

From the new generation of superstars like Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, to the old guard of Maggie Smiths and John Malkovich, Isle of Man Film has attracted many British and international actors since the nineties. And some Manx talent emerged internationally, like Samantha Barks on Broadway and Amy Jackson in Bollywood.

While the Island’s strategy for the local media industry in broadcast, film and video has made a complete U-turn, from Isle of Man Film as a former film shooting location for one-off film projects, towards becoming a base for digital media companies to locate their business, we can enjoy now a couple of Manx made movies through Video on Demand. Interestingly for the UK and the Isle of Man all feature films are streamed on Amazon with one exception being available on Netflix as well. New documentary series exploring the wonders of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves

Jan 23, 2019 | Isle of Media

Isle of Man headquartered content distributor ‘Greenlight International’ is heading to New Orleans to pitch their latest projects. Attending the renowned RealScreen Summit 2019 next week, the company who operates from the island, Manchester and Florida, announced pitching their latest asset to the industry’s leading broadcasters and online companies.

Inspired by the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status, Greenlight are set to create an immersive, informative series which explores the wonders of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves in 4K.

“Our Beautiful World” will begin its journey in Croatia, where they will head shortly to begin filming at a number of the country’s beautiful world heritage sites.

Influenced by their Manx roots, “Art Heroes Uncovered” series will begin with a look at the island’s influential designer, Archibald Knox, who was born there one hundred and fifty years ago. The idea came from the recent exhibition at the Manx Museum which has now been filmed extensively by the Greenlight production crew. As a creative and artistic genius, Knox was intrinsically part of the Art Nouveau movement that Italians still refer to it as ‘stile Liberty’, after the intricate Celtic designs he created for the Regent Street department store, Liberty’s, which was then the most fashionable shop in London.

It is hoped that with these projects, along with others in the Greenlight catalogue, will enable the talents of the production teams based on the Isle of Man to show their creativity to the world.

Jon Quayle, Director of Greenlight International commented “It is always great to have this incredible home-grown talent on the island and to be able to fly the Manx flag at these international events.”

Left to Right – Dr Richard Arning (Chairman Isle of Media), Craig Piligian (CEO Pilgrim Media Group), Aurora Mulligan (Executive Producer Documentaries Pilgrim Media Group), Clark Bunting (CEO Digital Circus Media)

EXCLUSIVE: Fast N’ Loud and American Chopper producer Pilgrim Media Group has teamed up with Digital Circus, run by former Discovery Channel President Clark Bunting, to produce a range of programming around the Isle of Man TT, the oldest and most challenging motorbike race in the world.

Craig Piligian’s and Bunting’s new media company, which produced HBO doc The Cold Blue and Nat Geo’s Yellowstone Live, are to develop TT race-driven content for TV, film, online streaming and gaming platforms after striking a deal with the Isle of Man government which operates the race.

British broadcaster ITV has previously aired the event in the UK, but this marks the first time that a live and all-media programming rights deal has been struck. Piligian and Bunting have established Global Motorsports Ventures, an Isle of Man company operating out of the small tax-generous island off the coast of the UK, North Hollywood and Detroit. The deal was brokered by Isle of Media, the on-Island media inward investment agency chaired by Dr. Richard Arning, and by Pilgrim Media Group’s Gretchen Stockdale, COO and General Counsel; and David Harris, SVP, Business and Legal Affairs.

2019 marks the TT’s 100th races and will see motorcycles blasting around the 37-mile road circuit, which includes steep seaside hills with tight corners and woodlands dotted with historic castle ruins, at close to 200mph.

Piligian said, “We’re extremely gratified to have forged such an historic deal that allows us to raise the profiles of the iconic TT and the Isle of Man – and of the riders whose fearlessness and individuality have built a competition like no other. With the proliferation of entertainment and sports platforms, this is the global moment for the TT.”

“The 100th TT is a momentous event and Craig and I are enormously proud that the IOM chose Pilgrim and Digital Circus to bring it to the world through this unprecedented, trans-media development opportunity,” said Bunting. “The Isle of Man TT offers riveting storytelling and jaw-dropping visuals unlike any other sporting event on the planet. The international assembly of racers who participate in the TT walk the line between extreme bravery and disaster – you have to see it to believe it.”

Minister for Enterprise, Laurence Skelly, whose department promotes the event, said, “The deal offers a unique opportunity to grow the audience and awareness of the TT Races, increase our commercial potential, and promote the Isle of Man as a tourism and business destination worldwide. The individuals involved in this project have a proven track record – within Hollywood and globally – and we look forward to working with them to maximise the event and its potential.”

Dr. Richard Arning, chairman of national development agency Isle of Media, added: “Having supported this new venture from the very beginning, we are absolute excited by working with those at the top of the entertainment field, and for the prospects this brings to our island. It will boost further our profile in global motorsports productions and distribution.”

As well as announcing the opening of an RTS Centre, Isle of Media is to become a Patron on the national RTS with centres across the UK and Ireland.

Partnering through a prestigious organisation such as the RTS will allow members on the Island to become part of a wider community developing skills and learning associated with television. The Isle of Man will become the 15th regional group to be part of the Royal Television Society.

Royal Television Society’s Television Magazine features Isle of Media

Aug 22, 2018 | Isle of Media

Isle of Media, CEO, Michael Wilson recently spoke to the Royal Television Society. In the article below he talks about Isle of Media, Isle of Man and it’s media business.

Isle of Media, Royal Television Society Logo

Michael Wilson - Isle of Media New CEOOver the years I think I’ve written three of these columns – I’ve been a ”Friend” in various places. Now as the nomad here is the fourth locations – A Friend in the Middle of the Irish Sea, although I suspect the headline will say “A Friend on the Isle of Man”.

Until the beginning of this year, the Isle of Man was shorthand for “I’m almost home…” as on my many flights back to Belfast or Dublin, when the pilot said we were just passing over the Isle of Man, then I knew landing was a matter of minutes away.

I reckon over the many years based on the island of Ireland but with HQ or regulator in London, I must have flown over the island more than 800 times, but not thought once about it!

That changed in January, when I became the CEO of Isle of Media – the public private partnership aiming to make the island a Media Hub.  (yes, really!) I like a professional challenge and I thought this would be at the top end of the scale – why would any media company uproot from established bases and networks and set up quite frankly in the middle of no-where.

While I’m still getting to know the island – as far as I can see there is no Greggs or Nando’s (I have found a Starbys and Costa), no Pret and not one mile of motorway on the whole 30 miles long island, which in its entirety is a UNESCO Biosphere.

Well actually all the reasons above are good reasons – many business (and especially their owners) want a move to a place where you know the name of the barista, and they know yours without writing it on a paper-cup. The restaurants are varied and owned often by the chief and cook with locally sourced ingredients. And with miles of beach, glen, tramway, steam trains to commute on and no speed limit on open roads, it’s a place for family and maverick alike. (The Island even has its own fairies – honest!)

And – I’ve even made it half way through the article without mentioning the tax rate. 0% Corporation Tax, 0% Capital Gains Tax, and a maximum person taxation rate of 20%. While Panorama painted a different picture, officially the Isle of Man is “white listed” by the OECD for good practice and transparency, so event your corporate governance teams can’t complain!

So how do we create a Media Cluster out of nothing – well that’s another misunderstanding – already on the island we have a serious media hub. At one point the Isle of Man was one of the British Isles busiest locations with more than 100 movies and TV shows filmed here, and we are now transitioning to now transitioning to a production, digital media and technology hub – from film we inherited a large creative talent base.

Greenlight, who make motorsport of international audiences including the TT Races for ITV4 and road racing for the BBC.

Mark Rowland’s Formatzone now has an outpost on the Island, as well as in Birmingham – its latest production Laurence of Suburbia being distributed by Sky Vision is beginning its international roll-out with the series on air in NZ, Poland, South Africa.

Motorsports Television have just invested in Duke Media in a major deal bringing the Duke archive to a global audience.

It’s not just productions though – SES Satellite Leasing have just built a teleport, Media Tech Advertising work across the world and Manx Telecom support an IP based tv news service.

A major facilities business is about to announce its arrival to cater for the growing business and to import post projects.

Plus, in the pipeline are an amazing media tech business, a number of animation projects and we are looking to become a major eSports base (to compliment the existing gaming businesses the flourish on the Island)

Oh, and in the almost final paragraph I mention money – we even have incentives to deliver businesses to the island – multimillion pound Government grants and funds, media savvy Angel investors and a business focussed regulatory and governmental environment.

Just like me, you may never have thought about the Isle of Man for media business, but we can all be wrong (occasionally)!

The series was filmed on the Isle of Man last summer, and involved over 25 local people including producers, researchers, camera and sound and because it’s a home makeover format designers, builders, electricians and decorators too. The production ‘Laurence of Suburbia’ stars Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen, best known for his BBC series Changing Rooms and DIY SOS. It takes a fresh approach to the TV makeover format, featuring houses where the history of the house and the location inspire the design. Laurence described Laurence of Suburbia as the ’ultimate make-over show’ which is the biggest he has done in the UK.

’It’s about making spaces that tell stories’, Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen said at the launch of the series.

The series premiered prime time in New Zealand this week on Choice TV  – and in South Africa on the Home Channel, with many more countries to follow.

Mark Rowland, CEO of Formatzone

“The series not only tells an original design story in each episode, but is a great advert for the beauties of the whole of the Isle of Man, celebrating the island in high summer in the episodes filmed on the island.

This should cheer up viewers in the middle of their Southern Hemisphere winter!”
