Paul Bettany received the Best Actor award last night at the Evening Standard Awards in London for his role in “The Heart of Me” and “Master and Commander”. “The Heart of Me” was filmed on the Island in 2001 and also stars Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Williams, who has already won an award at the British Independent Film awards for her part in the film.
The Film Commission has expanded with two new members of staff. Gill Young, our new Contract and Productions Support Officer and Sam Christian, our Film Officer have both started in the past two weeks and will work with exisiting staff in supporting existing production and new projects. One of Gill’s main duties will be Production liasion with local authorities and residents.
Erin Arts Centre is showing a series of Manx Films as part of its Films for the Community programme. Films such as Relative Values and Gabriel and Me will be shown on the second Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and are open to all.
The Lawless Heart is to be shown on Sky Movies 1 at 8pm tonight. It was filmed on the Island in 2000 and stars Bill Nighy and Tom Hollander. Before You Go, starring Julie Walters is to be shown on Tuesday 13th January at 8pm
Thomas and the Magic Railroad aired on BBC1 on New Years Day. The Children’s film starring Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda, was filmed on the Island in 1999. For more information, please visit the official website.
Plans for our next Production, ‘Colour Me Kubrick’ have now been finalised and the Production Company is due to start filming on the Island in February 2004. The film is based on the true story of Alan Conway, the middle-aged Londoner who assumed Stanley Kubrick’s identity over a period of years. The lead role is being played by John Malkovich and also stars TV’s Jim Davidson, Prunella Scales, and Leslie Phillips.
Trauma, the film starring Colin Firth and Mena Suvari and co-produced with the Isle of Man Film Commission, is due to premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January 2004. Sundance is held annually in Utah, USA. For more information, please visit their site.
We have now received Treasury approval for Piccadilly Jim, which is due to be filmed on the Island between 24th November to the 19th December 2003. Filming will take place at Island Studios in Ramsey for the most part. The film is based on the P G Wodehouse novel of the same name. The principal cast is Sam Rockwell (The Green Mile, Charlie’s Angels) Brenda Blethyn (Secrets and Lies, Little Voice) Tom Hollander (Gosford Park, Enigma) and Tom Wilkinson (Girl with a Pearl Earring, Shakespeare in Love)

Olivia Williams has won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a British Independent Film for her role in ‘The Heart of Me’, which was produced in conjunction with the Isle of Man Film Commission. The award was presented at the British Independent Film Awards held at Hammersmith Palais, Hammersmith, London on 4th November.
‘The Heart of Me’ was filmed on the Island in 2001 and also stars Helena Bonham Carter and Paul Bettany. The story follows two sisters in the 1930’s.
