Inspired by a 1779 painting by Zoffany of Dido Elizabeth Belle, and her life story, BELLE is the tale of a mixed – race girl raised as an aristocratic lady in England at the end of the 18th century. BELLE examines themes of morality, identity, class, gender and race and brings to life the love story of Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha Raw) and John Davinier (Sam Reid), in a world in which one of England’s most powerful men stands between them.
